MUMBAI: Six men, armed with choppers, were arrested by the Malad police early on Thursday when they were planning a dacoity. All the accused have past criminal records, in fact two of them have been convicted for murder.
"Our personnel were patrolling at Malad West around 4.30 am when they saw a truck halt at Goraswadi. A man, later identified as Dashrath Shinde, was moving suspiciously around the vehicle. Our personnel made inquiries with him and recognized him as a history sheeter," said a senior official from Malad police. Shinde was quizzed about the purpose of his presence in the area pre-daybreak. He started giving evasive answers, arousing the police's suspicion. When cops checked the truck, five men were found seated inside. They were carrying choppers and later admitted to having planned a dacoity.
The five men were identified as Laxman Dasha, Dilip Shinde, Sunil Shinde, Ambadas Shinde and Santosh Shinde. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused would leave behind lemons, chilli and turmeric powder at the crime scene, as part of a ritual they followed. Laxman and Dilip had committed a murder in Borivali East and had been arrested by the Kasturba Marg police at that time.
Dashrath has several criminal cases registered against him at the Khar police station while Ambadas has past cases of robbery and dacoity lodged at Palghar. Santosh too is a history sheeter. The police have seized the truck and are in the process of tracing the vehicle's owner. All six accused were booked under relevant provisions of IPC.
