MUMBAI: A drop in the number of Marathi medium students in the Mira-Bhayander region has left 29 teachers of private aided schools redundant.

The teachers have approached the civic administration to accommodate them in municipal schools. A number of private government aided Marathi schools have had to reduce their divisions due to drop in students seeking admission in vernacular schools.

The teachers who have been declared excess are currently carrying out electoral duties. They have written to the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBM) to absorb them in civic Marathi medium schools. The MBMC education department directed the teachers to the Thane district education office saying that the decision on accommodating excess teachers would be taken by the state government.

The district education office has redirected them to the municipality saying that it is a civic matter. The affected teachers have appealed to the state and the civic administration to address their problem and not pass on responsibility.
