MUMBAI: On September 6, the birthday of Mother Mary and Catholics across the world was celebrated.

In Mumbai, Mount Mary's is the Church saw a majority of the Catholics visiting for veneration.

Locally, in many East Indian dominated parishes novenas and palkhi (procession) is organised. Some of the places are Our Lady of Velankanni Church - Irla, Holy Cross Church - Kurla and Our Lady of Good Health-Bhatia - Uttan.

In Kurla, tomorrow, a palkhi will take Mother Mary's statue through all the villages of Kurla - Culbavor, Naupada, Old Kurla and Hall Village. Around 5,000 people will participate in the procession. In Velankanni there will be a massive procession on the last day of novena to be attended by around 50,000 pilgrims.

While the East Indian Community gets into the celebration mood there is a growing concern as the Manori Gorai Uttan-MGU Tourism Plan is announced. The East Indian Community feels that the Dharavi Beth Island consisting of 10 East Indian Villages will be destroyed totally due to the growing development.

23 East Indian Associations operating in various regions across Bombay, Vasai and Dahanu have assured support to Save the Dharavi Beth Island. Mobai Gaothan Panchayat is now looking forward to support from locals and some associations operating from the 10 Villages on the island.
