MUMBAI: Two police officers are recuperating their injuries when they crashed down from 15 feet height of a chawl at Upper Tunga Village in Powai on September 7. The two Powai sub-inspectors — Sachin Gawate (38) and Sushilkumar Bhosale (28) — had gone to nab the two robbers who has committed when they met with the incident around 1pm. The two accused were caught by the injured cops after an hourlong chase in the narrow bylanes and on roofs of congested chawls at Upper Tunga Village in Powai.

Despite being seriously injured, Gawate and Bhosale managed to nab the accused — Mansoor Shaikh (18) and Ramesh Chavan alias Baba (35) — who robbed a local resident, one Arvind Singh of Rs 500, after they attacked him (victim) at his house in a chawl situated near Gamdevi Mandir in Powai in the morning. The arrested accused has been booked under sections of the IPC for robbery, assault and not allowing the government servant to perform duty.

On Singh's complaint, Gawate from the Anti-Terror Cell (ATC) and Bhosale from prevention identified the accused having past criminal records and are drug addicts. "We managed to identify the accused with the help of the description and the alias names that Singh provided to us that matched with the criminal database that we have got in the police station. We managed to nab two accused while the third one Sahil managed to escape during the incident," sub-inspector Bhosale told TOI.

The chase for the accused began at 12 noon when Gawate and Bhosale went in search of the three accused who reportedly barged into Singh's house and after attacking him on his head with a bamboo stick made away with Rs500 cash from his wallet. "On seeing Gawate and Bhosale the three accused ran helter-skelter for an hour and hid on the rooftop of a hall belonging to Gamdevi Mandir situated in the chawl. Both the cops climbed the roof after learning their hide-out. Bhosale pounced on Shaikh when he kicked him losing control. Meanwhile Gawate who was coming from behind lost balance in the melee and all (accused and the cops) crashed down from the roof," said inspector Yaqoob Mulla.

Powai police senior inspector YL Jadhav said the two cops showed their determination to work to nab the accused despite knowing the robbery sum was very less. "Gawate is nursing his fractured right leg and injuries on right side of his ribs at Hiranandani Hospital. While Bhosale was discharged from hospital after he sprained his leg," said Jadhav.
