MUMBAI: The five artificial water bodies created by the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) for immersion of idols this Ganesh Chaturthi has failed to attract any devotees due to lack of proper publicity by the municipality.

The municipality created two artificial water bodies in Mira Road and three in Bhayander. In Bhayander, the ponds at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose ground, municipal ground near the Bhayander flyover and municipal school ground in Navghar, Bhayander (east), failed to attract any idols on the one-and-half day immersion on Tuesday.

The artificial ponds at Mira Road's ground in sector 3 of Shanti Nagar and a reserved plot near the Sardar Vallabhai Patel School also failed to get any idols for immersion.

The civic administration had incurred Rs 22 lakh to create the artificial ponds. The municipality, however, failed to create awareness about the artificial water bodies.

Devotees headed to their traditional immersion spots like creeks and natural ponds in the region. Though artificial ponds were created, no banners or sign boards directing devotees towards the artificial ponds were put up. The municipality is now making last minute efforts to draw devotees to the artificial ponds for the third, fifth, seventh and tenth day of immersions.
