​Mandals set up their own control rooms to beat crime

MUMBAI: Ganesh mandals resent the Mumbai police commissioner Satya Pal Singh's statement holding them responsible for any untoward incident involving women devotees. Members of one mandal showed TOI around the elaborate security facilities they had installed and wondered what more could be done to ensure safety.

Andhericha Raja in Azad Nagar has set up an expensive control room where they assimilate CCTV footage from 24 cameras in the pandal and surrounding open ground. The room has walkie-talkie sets for security personnel and volunteers. Metal detectors and metal frame doorways are installed at the entrance, fire extinguishers are in place and the odd sniffer dog is also spotted. Scores of adult and child ganasevaks regulate crowds and frisk devotees. Bags are checked routinely. The mandal has booked a permanent bed at Nanavati Hospital for any emergency.

Spokesperson Uday Salian said the idea of holding mandals responsible beyond a limit was impractical. "We are doing all we can," he said.

The representative of another prominent mandal questioned why the police had not held the owners of Shakti Mills responsible for the heinous assault on a photojournalist last month. "Have they held the local police responsible for failing to notice that serial gangrapes occurred over months? Mandals are cannon fodder for authorities who are unable to maintain law and order," he said.

Echoing the words of a state politician, he wondered what role the police would play once citizens were asked to take care of law and order themselves. "And will they provide identity cards, arms and ammunition to fight crime?" he asked.

Truck carrying idol runs into loose cables

A mishap was averted at D N Nagar in Andheri (E) on Friday when a truck carrying an idol for immersion emerged from the Barfiwala school lane and ran into a bunch of cables dangling three feet below the electrical perch. A boy, armed with a pole, climbed atop the moving truck and held up the cables allowing the vehicle to move past safely.
