RTO launches drive against errant bikers

MUMBAI: The RTO has begun a drive against errant two-wheeler riders, prosecuting 43 riders for violations of Motor Vehicle Act after checking 165 bikes and scooters earlier this week.

Regional transport officer KT Golani said the violations were mainly not possessing proper documents, licence and not wearing helmets. "Our aim is to ensure that authorised vehicles are on the road, people have a valid licence to ride them and the road safety measures are not ignored," he said.

The drive will continue throughout the week, he stated. The RTO officials will conduct random checks to verify if all bikers have proper documents, pay taxes on time and have PUCs done.

The officials want every two-wheeler owner in island city to carry all necessary papers while travelling. "Else, they will have to face embarassment when caught by our officials," he stated.

The RTO will issue showcause notices, confiscate licences or slap fines on offenders. If anybody is found plying old scooters and bikes illegally, he or she will be prosecuted and asked to pay all taxes with fines, sources stated. Polluting vehicles will also be dealt with sternly.
