The buses will ply during peak hours and use the Eastern Freeway (EFW) route.
"We already run buses on the EFW and from Panvel to Mantralaya. We have a peak hour service at 8 am and 5.30 pm. Now, we plan to introduce buses at 8.30am from Panvel and at 6pm from Mantralaya to cater to the demand from passengers," said MSRTC spokesperson Mukund Dhus.
MSRTC managing director Deepak Kapoor said that the response to the new service was "phenomenal". "It saves nearly 23 minutes of travel time for commuter," he stated.
It will also ensure fast connectivity between south Mumbai and the far flung suburbs of Navi Mumbai. The buses will be of great benefit not only to government staffers, but to residents of far flung areas like Nerul, Belapur and Kamothe/Kharghar. "It will also help those stranded in monsoon due to train disruptions," said MSRTC managing director Deepak Kapoor.
The buses have halts at Mantralaya, CST (near station), Vashi, Nerul, CBD Belapur, Kamothe and Panvel in both directions. Two brand new buses, with specially created double doors (first time in MSRTC), are deployed on the route. The total distance covered between Mantralaya and Panvel is 50.1 km for which the end-to-end fare is Rs 52. The minimum fare has been kept at Rs 6. The buses have 2 X 2 comfortable seating arrangement. The total seating capacity is 44 and the buses allow 11 standees.
