MUMBAI: Four men have been arrested by the Kandivali police recently on charges of cheating.

Three of the accused would offer to procure loans for buyers who planned on purchasing home appliances. But once the loan disbursement cheque arrived, the accused would pocket the appliance themselves and sell it off to the fourth accused who is a shopowner.

The accused, Jitendra Thakkar, Gaurav Pradhan and Aqeel Shaikh worked at a consumer durables store at a mall in Kandivali West, while Vishal Agarwal ran an electronics shop.

According to the police, Thakkar, Pradhan and Shaikh would convince buyers, who came to the store to buy home appliances, that they could help them obtain loans. They would ask the buyers to fill out forms and produce photocopies of documentation necessary to apply for the loan. The loan disbursement cheque would arrive in the store's name. The accused would then collect the appliance and later sell it off to Agarwal.

At least six to eight complaints have come forward so far. They have been conned of Rs 8 to 10 lakh and cops suspect many more people to have been conned similarly. The racket came to light when one of the complainants, Shivdas Shinde, 55, received a letter from a finance company, demanding payment of loan installments. Shinde, a Malad resident, was shocked as he had never received the loan disbursement cheque in the first place. He then approached the Kandivali police who registered an FIR. A refrigerator, that Shinde had booked and was collected by the accused, has been recovered from them, police said.
