MSRTC managing director Deepak Kapoor said that the response to the new service was "phenomenal". "We got 16 passengers from Panvel and there was a huge crowd waiting for the bus at the next stop -- Kamothe. It was nearly packed when it entered the Eastern Freeway from where it zoomed to south Mumbai and saved nearly 23 minutes of travel time for commuter,'' he stated.
Eight bus services will ply on this route daily. It will ensure fast connectivity between south Mumbai and the far flung suburbs of Navi Mumbai. The buses will be of great benefit not only to government staffers, but to residents of far flung areas like Nerul, Belapur and Kamothe/Kharghar. "It will also help those stranded in monsoon due to train disruptions,'' said MSRTC managing director Deepak Kapoor.
The first bus will leave Panvel at 8 am on Monday. The buses will have halts at Mantralaya, CST (near station), Vashi, Nerul, CBD Belapur, Kamothe and Panvel in both directions. Two brand new buses, with specially created double doors (first time in MSRTC), were deployed on the route on Monday.
The total distance covered between Mantralaya and Panvel is 50.1 km for which the end-to-end fare is Rs 52. The minimum fare has been kept at Rs 6. The buses have 2 X 2 comfortable seating arrangement. The total seating capacity is 44 and the buses will also allow 11 standees.
Commuters have welcomed the new bus service. The service has also raised eyebrows in BEST circles. Sources said that due to competition, BEST is likely to augment the services on its Expressway routes and double the number of bus services. At present, BEST runs two bus services in morning and evening hours, between Cuffe Parade and Vashi and another from south Mumbai to Chembur.
