MUMBAI: The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) had issued Indian CDC's (seafarer's documents) to Seafarer's working on cruise ships and other Merchant Navy foreign flagships last week.

Abdulgani Serang, National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) general secretary-cum-treasurer, said thousands of Indian seafarers to be benefited with the efforts. "Many of these seafarers hold Liberian, Bahamian, Panamian CDC's etc but do not have Indian CDC's. NUSI had demanded that the Maritime Administration should facilitate the employment prospects of thousands of seafarers who are gainfully employed for years together by issuing them Indian CDC's (seafarers documents)," said Serang.

The DGS positively took up the matter and issued new guidelines enabling thousands of seafarers working on Cruise and Merchant Navy Foreign flag ships to get the Indian seafarers document (CDC) to facilitate their employment prospects. With a view to provide assistance to eligible seafarers to get Indian CDC's, NUSI also started Facilitation Centres in its Head Office in Mumbai and at its Branch Office in Goa. The procedure and particulars for receiving the Indian CDC were explained in detail so that the seafarer's applications were complete in all aspects. Hundreds of seafarers benefited from the NUSI Facilitation Centres and applied to the Maritime Administration for acquiring Indian CDC's.

Sarang said they are now pleased to inform you that on the basis of the application from seafarers, the Maritime Administration has started issuing Indian CDC's as per guidelines to the seafarers working on Cruise ships and other Merchant Navy foreign flagships. Many eligible seafarers are in receipt of the Indian CDC's issued by the Maritime Administration. Indian seafarers are very happy from this development.

Seafarers who need assistance in acquiring Indian CDC's as per guidelines can approach NUSI Head office located at NUSI Bhavan, 4, Goa Street, Mumbai- 400 001 or NUSI Goa Branch Office located at River Sal Estate (Khareband office), Benaulim.
