MUMBAI: Taking a short cut across the railway tracks cost a woman her life on Wednesday. A watchman was the second victim of trespassing. Both incidents occurred around 5.35 am near Santa Cruz station.

In the first case, the victim was a 42-year-old woman from Satara district who had gone on a pilgrimage in a group. "The woman was travelling by the Lokshakti mail which operates from Bandra Terminus to Kutch. The train had halted near Santa Cruz station so the woman thought she would walk the short distance till Bandra, instead of sitting idle in the train," a railway police official said. "However, when she got down and began walking on the tracks, she was knocked down by Duronto Express which was headed towards Mumbai Central at a tremendous speed." The cops informed the woman's husband who came to claim her body.

In the second case, the victim was a 50-year-old watchman who used to work with a bank located outside Santa Cruz station. "The watchman had probably headed towards the tracks to attend nature's call but a local train, moving at a high speed, hit him from behind. Some commuters witnessed the incident and alerted us," said a railway police official. Both the victims were declared dead at Cooper Hospital. Two cases of accidental deaths were registered.
