Said transport expert Ashok Datar,"The eastern corridor freeway, from Orange Gate in south Mumbai to Chembur, will provide an uninterrupted 14-km drive. It will save our buses a lot of fuel and passengers should, therefore, be charged lower fares on these fast track routes."
He also demanded that more buses should be encouraged on the freeway and there should be a toll to restrict the movement of cars. "We should dissuade people to use private cars and they should be asked to travel in buses. If we are spending crores of rupees on a freeway, it should be utilised to improve the public transport system,'' he pointed out.
"We can also give a different look and logo to buses on fast track routes along the freeway. The BEST should promote the use of such buses which will help people from far flung suburbs, including those in Thane and Navi Mumbai, to reach CST in a record time,'' he stated.
MMRDA joint metropolitan commissioner Ashwini Bhide said she was in favour of more buses being operated along the Eastern freeway. "However, the 14-km non-stop stretch from south Mumbai to Chembur, will be open to all cars and there will be no toll as it is within the city limits,'' she stated. "It will provide fast connectivity to areas like Wadala, Chembur and Ghatkopar (by year end, the freeway will extend upto Ghatkopar). The BEST officials have approached us and they are keen on starting fast track routes on the free corridor,'' she added.
The elevated road from Orange Gate to Bhakti Park (about 9.29 km) will decongest Ambedkar Road, Port Road and P D'Mello Road. Motorists towards Thane and Navi Mumbai and some on central suburbs will prefer the freeway.
It may also attract buses from JVLR and upcoming SCLR to take this road to cut short the travel time and attract more passengers.
