MUMBAI: As the Supreme Court refused more time to surrender to three of the 1993 Mumbai blasts convicts, its decision was accepted with resignation on Tuesday.

Septuagenarian Zaibunisa Kazi's 40-yearold daughter told TOI: "Who is there to listen in this democratic country? A woman has been wrongly convicted. I have been protesting her innocence for long. But people just listened, they did nothing." Zaibunisa was sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment for storing in her Bandra house a bag of AK-56 rifles, hand grenades and ammunition allegedly brought from Sanjay Dutt's residence. Zaibunisa was one of the three whose plea was refused by the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Her designer daughter had earlier said: "She is innocent. I have been fighting for my mother's freedom for the last 20 years. I cannot imagine my life without her; I did not get married since she is my life. Her life revolves around her children." The daughter had added then, "She is 75 and was recently operated upon for a tumour in kidney, which fortunately turned out to be benign. But she needs to undergo medical tests every few months."

Like Zaibunisa's daughter, several convicts expressed dismay on Tuesday. Many convicts who had arrived in Mumbai from Raigad to meet their lawyer became teary-eyed as they discussed the futures of their kin. One showed a photo of his eight-year-old daughter.

Another convict spoke of supporting his family . "I had told my employer that I was an undertrial in a case, but didn't specify the case. I wouldn't have got the job otherwise," he said. One of the five former policemen punished for playing a role in the arms landing at Shekhadi coast, the convict became a caretaker and gardener at a bungalow. He now has to return to prison to serve out the remaining three years of his five-year term. Another convict said he has told his work colleagues that he is "going out of the country" for the next 2.5 years.

Others were pragmatic. "I wish to complete the remaining year of the term without making review pleas or extension demands. I want to put it all behind me," said Salim Durrani.
