'If sea link has toll, why not Eastern Freeway'

MUMBAI : Transport expert Ashok Datar said that if the Bandra-Worli sealink has a toll, then the same rule should apply for the Eastern Freeway which is likely to be inaugurated in May.
MMRDA officials, however, denied that there will be a toll. "It will be free for all cars, SUVs and buses 24 X 7. We cannot have toll for a freeway which is within the city,"said MMRDA joint metropolitan commissioner Ashwini Bhide Datar demanded that there should be toll for cars and only public transport such as BEST buses should be allowed to access the fast corridor free of cost.
"Also, we should not increase bus fares because of the high speed service,"he said. "It should be the same fare as applicable to similar distances. It is a matter of principle that we should tilt the pricing in favor of public transport rather than providing free use of such expensive infrastructure to private cars."
He further stated : "Keeping the same fare as on regular bus routes will encourage migration from private transport to public transport. The pricing of AC buses on the route should actually be reduced as in that case, the fixed cost will be distributed over double the miles within same hour. The fuel cost will account for only 20 % of the total costs of bus operation,"he added.
