The woman, a fashion designer, told police that her ex-boyfriend was demanding a divorce even though they were never married. Meanwhile, the man has told the Khar police that the two have been married for three years.
The police say they are facing a tough time convincing the two, who are distantly related, to sort out the issue. They have asked their relatives to rope in community leaders for help.
The police say the two lived in the western suburbs and became close friends in 2007. Recently, the woman walked out of the relationship for unknown reasons and decided to marry someone else. The man, who along with his family owns a mineral water factory, told her she couldn't remarry without getting a divorce according to rituals.
He claimed they had married through proper rituals, but without family members present in 2009. But the woman claimed there was no marriage. The issue dragged on and recently the man threatened to upset her marriage plans. The woman and her father filed a written complaint with the police. They don't want criminal action against the businessman, but want the police to stop him from "harassing" her.
Police say the man even brought a qazi, who had allegedly married the two, to the police station . The man said he was ready to give her a divorce if she asked for it. The police said both sides are unwilling to compromise due to egos. "We can intervene if there is any criminal aspect ," said a police officer.
