MUMBAI: Kestrel Infrastructure, the contractors operating the Mira Bhayander municipal transport (MBMT) buses has sought a fare hike. The contractors have cited rising fuel and spare part prices as the reason for a fare hike.

The contractors have asked for a fare hike of Rs 3 to Rs 15. Fares were hiked last year.

The Mira Bhayander municipal corporation (MBMC) runs 50 buses procured under the Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission (JNNURM). The buses are run by the contractors who pay a royalty of Re one a km to the civic administration. The drivers and conductors are also hired on contractual basis. The buses run in Mira-Bhayander, Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan and Dombivli.

Passengers have lamented the services and quality of the buses. Civic sources said that a fare hike may not be possible with political parties eyeing the next Lok Sabha elections.
