MUMBAI: An emergency spine surgery was performed on Congress MLC Muzaffar Hussain on Saturday. The over two hour operation was performed at the Umrao hospital in Mira Road. Hussain (44) is the chairperson of the hospital.
Hussain had been complaining of severe pain for over 48 hours. The Micro Discectomy of Lumbar Vertebra no 4 and 5 (L4/L5) inter vertebral disc was performed under Dr Harleen Singh Luther, Senior Consultant Neurosurgery & Spine Surgery.
He was accompanied by Dr Swatantra Mishra, HOD, Critical care & Anesthesia at Umrao Hospitals. The MRI of the lower spine revealed that the inter vertebral disc between L4/L5 had expanded & extruded itself, thereby putting pressure on a nerve root on the right side causing severe pain. In the surgery the disc pieces were removed, the nerve root was freed through a small three cm incision. Hussain recovered from the general anesthesia to find that the agonising pain had completely disappeared and is back to his regular activities.
