MUMBAI: Following the Mumbra building crash on April 4 that claimed 74 lives and injured several, the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has send notices to occupants of dangerous buildings to vacate.

Residents of 56 dangerous and dilapidated buildings have been given time till May 8 to vacate to enable demolition of the structures. The buildings are over 30 years old and do not enjoy additional Floor Space Index (FSI) to go for redevelopment. Most of the buildings are in Bhayander (east). Political pressure on deleting the names of dangerous buildings from the list has begun.

In some cases, residents have alleged that their buildings have been put on the dangerous list by the land owners to speed up redevelopment. Atleast eight of the dangerous building has sought a stay from the Thane sessions court. The MBMC does not have transit camps making it difficult for occupants of dangerous structures to find alternate accomodation.

While buildings have been on the dangerous list for over a decade, it was only last year that then MBMC commissioner Vikram Kumar razed down 20 dangerous residential structures. He was abruptly transferred. The civic administration has sought police help to vacate occupants of dangerous buildings.
