MUMBAI: All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) as an apex body of Transporters - (both cargo and passenger), is aggrieved at the rising incidents ofvehicle thefts, pilferage of goods and money extortion taking place in Navi Mumbai. This is due to proliferation of anti-social elements in the Navi Mumbai, said the president of AIMTC, Bal Malkit Singh. A delegation of senior members of AIMTC from Navi Mumbai led by Singh met the Navi Mumbai police commissioner, A K Sharma, on Monday and apprised about the problems prevailing in the Kalamboli and Port area.

We have been frequently getting complaints from our members from Navi Mumbai, especially from members from Kalamboli area, regarding complaints of vehicle thefts and extortion by anti-social elements in the area. Over past few years Kalamboli area in Navi Mumbai has become hub for transportation activity owing to its vicinity to JNPT port, which is important and crucial for export - import business from Mumbai.,'' said Singh.

Many of the transporters have opened their offices in that area for providing efficient transport services to the clients from across the country.

There are many roadside 'dhabas' that have sprung up near the steel yard and footpaths of the transport centre. These illegal dhabas provide shelter to other shady activities like drug peddling, liquor, illegal trade, gambling etc, he further alleged.

The victims are mostly single or two truck owners, whose bread and butter are these heavy vehicles.

The AIMTC members have approached the police officials at local police station, but they are harassed as either their complaints are not registered or they are discouraged from filing the same, giving impression of complicity of police with the anti-social elements, said Singh.

Because of the callous approach by the local police these criminals are emboldened, having no fear of law. Our members have met and represented to the police officials at various police stations in Navi Mumbai against the criminal activities in the area and even identified the culprits in few instances but there has been no action on behalf of the police officials. We have even mentioned specific complaints that still lying unresolved in spite of the fact that the names of the identified criminal are mentioned therein,'' alleged Singh.

There is reportedly a big scam of trailers in JNPT going on. The stolen vehicles are sold as scrap metal or their chassis is tampered with to give the vehicles a new identity.

We have asked the police commissioner of Navi Mumbai to take action against the concerned officials at the local police station and order registration of the complaints immediately, take decisive steps for sanitizing the area from criminal elements and removal of all types of roadside dhabas. We have suggested that police patrolling will be increased in the area to ensure safety of goods and vehicles in the area,'' said Singh.
