Mumbai was normal on bandh day

MUMBAI: Life in Mumbai was normal during the Bharat Bandh on Wednesday barring stray incidents of stone pelting on buses and banks remaining shut for general public.

However, it will be another normal day on Thursday, which is the first day of HSC exams and no union in Mumbai will participate in the bandh.

On Wednesday, office-goers did not face any inconvenience as the autos and taxis were out in full strength, the BEST plied more than the regular fleet of buses it had planned during peak hours and trains services were normal on Western, Central and harbour lines.

While garbage were cleared by the BMC vans at most places, the supply of essential services like water, milk, vegetables, power and gas supply was not hit.

The BEST buses recorded a cent per cent attendance of conductors and 98% drivers." Our services ran smoothly except for two stray incidents of stone pelting - one on route No 422 at Powai and another on route No. 186 at Marol. But this did not affect the services and our buses plied with grilles fitted on windscreens and windows," said BEST senior spokesperson AS Tamboli. Despite the "industrial bandh", over 10,000 small and medium scale industries in Vasai taluka remained open.

The MSRTC too ran its services, specially the popular Mumbai-Pune AC Shivneri buses. WR spokesperson Sharat Chandrayan said: "There has been no effect of Bharat Bandh on WR suburban services and all services have been running normally." There was heavy police bandobast in several parts of the state specially in the industrial areas.
