MSRTC adopts new strategy to prevent bus fare hike

MUMBAI: This could be good news for commuters. The MSRTC has decided to adopt a new strategy so that it does not have to hike fares, especially on the Mumbai-Pune AC bus route.

This is despite hikes in diesel prices every month. Speaking to TOI, MSRTC managing director Deepak Kapoor said, "There have been two hikes in diesel prices in the past two months. But we have decided to keep our fares unchanged on all routes."

In the last one year, the MSRTC had already hiked fares twice mainly on the AC bus routes such as the Mumbai-Pune Shivneri service after a Rs 5-hike in diesel in September 2012.

"We have decided to adopt a different approach from Monday. Our drivers and conductors will be given incentives to ensure that buses halt for more time and more passengers are ferried in a single journey," he said. The corporation is targeting an additional revenue of Rs 150 crores by incentivising staffers and increasing passenger load.

"It is called the Pravasi Vadva scheme, wherein other staffers like inspectors and technical staff are also encouraged to ensure there is good turnout of buses, fewer breakdowns, optimum utilisation of fleet and more revenue to the transport undertaking," he stated. The MSRTC has already begun procuring diesel from the retail outlets at lower rates, but the price at these outlets will also increase substantially in coming months.

"This means that going to the retail outlets is also not the final solution," Kapoor said.

"This is the reason why we are launching this scheme from Monday to increase passenger load and deploy more buses on roads."

He said drivers were also being sensitized not to overspeed or cause accidents.

"The accident involving death of a young girl at Sion recently is unfortunate. We are conducting a thorough probe and will take action against the driver," he added. MSRTC spokesperson Mukund Dhus said that drivers/conductors will be offered incentive upto Rs 100 cash per day to increase the number of passengers. "He will also get the benefit of earning upto Rs 3,000 per month extra," he added.
