At 10.00 am the march will wend its way from Juhu bus depot to the Vile Parle church grounds. Around 1887, the native Portuguese Christians had changed the name of their community to East Indians.
Their associations claim that their lands were taken over during British rule, particularly the World War to build military and airport facilities. After Independence the government allegedly took over land parcels for industrial and infrastructure needs. They say that in modern times their gaothans (villages) are being targeted.
"We will demand our rights as original inhabitants of Mumbai and demand our lands back if they cannot fulfil those. The aim is also to show unity as a community," said Mobai Gaothan Panchayat (MGP) spokesperson Gleason Barretto.
"Other communities are granted their demands in a few days but we have not been granted a single benefit till date. We East Indians remain strangers in our own land. The MGP will voice its 10-point agenda at the rally to the Central and state governments, BMC and the Archdiocese," he added.
The associations supporting the morcha are the Bombay East Indian Association (BEIA), Bassein Portuguese Cultural Association, Bright Seva Samiti, Kurla, Gauthans Active Residents Association of Juhu (GARAJ), Kolovery Welfare Association, Kalina, MGP, Orlem East Indian Association, Oshiwara East Indian Welfare Association, United Social Welfare Association, Kurla, and the Vakola East Indian Association.
