MUMBAI: HRIDAY(Health Related Information Dissemination Amongst Youth) and Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) have written to finance minister P Chidambaram urging him to raise taxes on tobacco products in the upcoming Budget session which starts February 21.

Raising taxes on tobacco is one of the major factor which helps in reducing tobacco use, especially among women and children, said a HRIDAY spokesperson.

In the letter to Chidambram, the social groups have informed that there are over 27.50 crore tobacco users in India, of these oral tobacco is consumed by over 16.40 crore Indians.

Over a whopping 10 lakh Indians die every year of tobacco linked fatal diseases. HRIDAY and PHFI have also mentioned that tobacco is an economic burden for the Government of India. According to a study, the direct medical cost for treating diseases related to tobacco use in 2004 was Rs 5217 crore, while the indirect cost was Rs 2173.75 crore, which more than offsets all the benefits accruing in the form of the revenue and employment generated by the tobacco industry.
