MUMBAI: For 47-year-old Rashesh Shah, the chief executive officer of Edelweiss Group, life is all about setting goals and achieving them. Having made his mark in the financial world, the self-proclaimed "running addict" has now trained his sights on his next challenge: The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon.

Shah discovered the joy of running in 2006 when he decided it was time for him to hit the gym. A few minutes on the treadmill convinced him to take up running and he has since been legging it up at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse. "Initially, I did not believe that could run more than two laps of the racecourse (one lap is 2.2km). One day I ran more than two laps and that's when I started believing that I could actually run a half marathon," he said. Eventually, he registered for the Mumbai marathon's 6-km dream run. "I would religiously prepare for it and when I completed my first six-kilometre run, I felt a great achievement," said Shah.

Last year, Shah participated in four half marathons and a full marathon (42.2km) in Amsterdam. This Sunday, the financial guru will participate in half marathon (21km) in Mumbai. "I don't like running the full marathon in India," said Shah. "Besides, my busy schedule leaves me with little time to train for the full marathon. You need a lot of time for training and I am constantly travelling. I try and squeeze in a run whenever and wherever possible."

Despite running the half marathon for some years now, he is still wary of the last few kilometres. "I hate running the first few and the last few kilometres in a marathon. If I can get somebody to guide me through these, I can, maybe, better my personal best of 2 hours and 13 minutes for a half marathon," said Shah, adding that he is not keen on participating in the full marathon in Mumbai. "Right now, I enjoy running the half marathon and want to finish the distance in 2 hours and six minutes in January."

Shah feels he is still in the transition stage. "I do not have any running goals. I will run till I enjoy it. Personal bests are there to be broken but I don't stress over them." When it comes to running, Shah loves Tokyo, which he frequents because of work. "I also like running in New York. In Mumbai, I love to run on the Peddar Road stretch. The challenge of running uphill and the atmosphere is unmatched."
