MUMBAI: Home minister R R Patil on Thursday cleared a proposal to set up a separate cell to probe crime against women in Mumbai. The newly formed wing will probe cases of rape, molestation, dowry and other atrocities against women. TOI was first to report on the state's initiative to start a separate investigation wing categorically to probe cases of crime against women.

"An officer of DCP rank will head this special cell. The functioning of the new wing will be monitored by the joint commissioner of police (crime)," Patil said, adding, "The government aims to start similar cells in other parts of the state too." The new wing will have one DCP and ACP each. Besides, the special wing will comprise two police inspectors, 12 assistant police inspectors and police sub-inspectors and 61 constabulary staff. "Funds from police modernisation will be allocated to set up infrastructure for this cell," Patil added.
