MUMBAI:There is low awareness on the PAT (perform, achieve, trade) scheme, which aims to reduce carbon emmission intensity by 20-25% by 2020, is very low. The scheme was introduced by the government through the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). Speaking at a CII conference, H N Daruwalla, convenor, CII Maharashtra energy & environment panel & executive VP and head business (E&E Services), Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co., said, it was important to spread awareness about PAT on a larger scale.

Daruwalla mentioned that on the basis of 2008 guidelines initiated by government to enhance energy efficiency in the designated consumers (DCs), 8 energy intensive industries have been identified under PAT scheme and by 2015, 8 more industries will be considered in the second around. Daruwalla, stated that going forward industry sector is expected to contribute 27% to the GDP and 40% in terms of energy conservation. Pradeep Bhargava, chairman, CII western region & director, Cummins Generator Technologies India, said India currently ranks sixth in the world in terms of primary energy demand, and at present rate of growth, its demand for energy will continue to soar and by 2030 it could be expected to emerge as the fourth largest consumer of energy after the US, China and Japan.

Bhargava said with higher dependency on fossil fuels for our energy generation there is an impending threat of climate change. He said India has already taken a voluntary step in the positive direction by targeting a reduction of 20-25% in carbon emission intensity by 2020 based on 2005 levels and investing in clean energy to meet 10% of the total energy consumption by 2015 through renewable energy resources. Satish Jamdar, chairman, CII Maharashtra State Council & MD, Blue Star, said the key premise of the scheme is to incentivize the industry to achieve better energy efficiency improvements than their specified specific energy consumption improvement target in a cost-effective manner.
``PAT scheme in India is an example of regulation that signals, energy efficiency measures are no longer an option but something all major consumers of energy will have to mandatory consider and implement,'' said Jamdar.
