Forest officials on high alert due to sudden spate of leopard attacks

MUMBAI: The sudden spate in leopard attacks around Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) has set forest officials on the defensive. Since the recent most leopard attack that happened last Sunday, forest officials have trapped three leopards by putting cages in the area.

Activists, however, feel that the solution lies in reducing man-animal conflict by ensuring that forest area is not occupied by humans. Trapping leopards is no way to ensuring that the animal won't venture out towards the human habitats. Krishna Tiwari of City Forest Initiative said that trapping cannot tell if the leopard trapped is the same as the one who attacked.

A thorough study has to be done to ascertain that. "Trapping is more speculative. There is no way to find out if the same animal is trapped or not. We need someone to study the pattern, take camera trappings, analyse pug marks to know if one leopard is behind all attacks," said Tiwari. "Also, the boundary of the forest has to be built and well kept to separate humans from animals," he added.

Another environmentalist said that its due to government's apathy and lack of a proper rehabilitation system, people are still living on encroached land around the forest. "Those areas lack proper toilets, electricity etc, making people vulnerable to attacks by animals. If only the government had made a rehabilitation plan which had suited the needs of the poor living on encroached lands, a proper and more effective rehabilitation could have been carried out," said the environmentalist.
