Safety on campus must tighten as girl population rises

MUMBAI: For most of us, at least when we were growing up, school and college used to be one of the safest havens. Yes, there might have been ragging, stray cases of eve-teasing too, but as a girl you at least used to feel safe once you entered the campus.

The alleged rape of a 21-year-old student at the National Law School of India University in Bangalore, clearly shows that there is no secure place for a woman anymore. What is even more astounding is that the crime was not committed by her fellow collegians but by a gang of eight hoodlums.

Granted that the campus stretches over 1100 acres and even has a forested area. Granted that it was a little late in the evening and the girl and her friend were in a deserted stretch. But how did so many drunken men get into the college premises? Why have they not been tracked down yet?

Yes, these are dangerous times and we need to be careful, and make sure that we make intelligent choices. But the college has a larger responsibility to protect and safeguard its own students too. There is need for proper checks at the main gate itself, at least to make sure that outsiders can't walk in, commit a crime and walk out so fearlessly.
